How Much Do Plantation Shutters Cost?

Plantation shutters are one of the few window treatments that buyers consistently call a home upgrade rather than an accessory — they're built-in, they last decades, and they tend to pay you back at resale. The most common question we get is simply: what will they cost me? Here's an honest breakdown of what drives the price and how to get an exact number for your windows.

The short answer

For custom, professionally installed interior plantation shutters, most homeowners land in the range of $200 to $450 per window opening, depending on size, material, and options. A whole-house project of 10–20 windows is typically quoted as a package. Very large openings, specialty shapes (arches, angles), and premium hardwood run higher; small standard windows run lower.

What changes the price

1. Material

This is the biggest single factor. The three lines we install:

• Composite / engineered (Woodlore & Woodlore Plus): the best value. Extremely stable, won't warp in humidity or direct sun, and ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and big sunny windows. Most of our projects use these.
• Premium hardwood (Normandy): real wood, lighter weight, allows wider panels and the largest louvers. The choice when you want a genuine wood finish or stain.

2. Size of the opening

Shutters are priced largely by square footage, so a tall foyer or patio-door opening costs more than a small bathroom window. Wider openings may also need extra panels or a divider rail, which affects price.

3. Louver size

Larger louvers (3½" and 4½") give a cleaner, more open view and a more modern look, and generally cost a bit more than the traditional 2½". The right size also depends on your window's proportions.

4. Specialty shapes

Arched tops, angled (raked) windows, circles, and other custom shapes require custom fabrication and add to the cost — but they're often the windows where shutters make the biggest visual impact.

5. Finish & options

Standard white paints are included; specialty paints, stains, and custom color matching can add a surcharge. A hidden tilt rod (so there's no visible bar down the center) is a popular upgrade for a cleaner face.

6. Mount & frame

Inside vs. outside mount and the frame style you choose (for a built-in look or to cover an out-of-square opening) can shift the price slightly.

Are plantation shutters worth it?

Two reasons they tend to justify the investment: they add to resale value because buyers see them as a permanent home feature, and they cut energy costs — closed louvers add an insulating layer that reduces heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. Unlike fabric shades, they don't yellow, sag, or need replacing every few years.
